Accolades for CAWC Faculty and Staff

Dr. Alysia Fischer, Lecturer, Center for American and World Cultures, has received the 2012 Outstanding Female Faculty Award from Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Lambda MU Chapter. Congratulations to Dr. Fischer for such a well-deserved recognition!

Jacqueline Rioja, Assistant Director, Center for American and World Cultures was the keynote speaker for Northern Kentucky Univeristy, NKU Annual Cesar Chavez Celebration this past March 29th - part of a large nation wide celebration in honor of Cesar Chavez Day. This event was held at the Student Union and also included the announcement of the winners of the annual Ceasr Chavez writing contest.

2010-2011 Graduate Research Forum 

The Center for American and World Cultures congratulates Lore Denisse Rivera Hernandez, Graduate Assistant at the Center for American and World Cultures (CAWC) and a Graduate Student at the Institute for the Environment and Sustainability (IES) at Miami University, and her team -recipients of the 2010-2011 Graduate Research Forum, Top Poster Presentation Award for the “Crawford House and Woods Demonstration Site” project.

The Graduate Research Forum was held on Friday, November 5, at Shriver Center where more than 100 master’s and Ph.D. students presented their research. Graduate Alumni and faculty evaluated student’s oral poster presentation. Lore Denisse Rivera Hernandez and her team were presented the award at the Graduate School Awards Reception on Monday, April 18, 2011 at Miami’s Shriver Center.

2011 Women Breaking Barriers Award

Visiting Assistant Professor Alysia Fischer was selected to be the recipient of the 2009 Women Breaking Barriers Award

The Women’s Leadership Celebration and Symposium Committee has selected CAWC Visiting Assistant Professor Alysia Fischer as the recipient of the 2009 Women Breaking Barriers Award for her dedication to the advancement of women within the Miami University community.

Dr. Fischer received the 2009 Kathy McMahon-Klosterman Award last Friday, October 23 at the 2009 Women's Leadership Symposium and Celebration luncheon "Looking Back, Leaping Forward: Changing Legacies of Women's Leadership."

The mission of the Women’s Leadership Symposium and Celebration is to celebrate both the relational and individual strength of women. Through facilitating connections with others, this event promotes an appreciation for the historical and contemporary struggles of women and provides an opportunity to honor today’s women leaders and inspire hope for tomorrow’s leaders.
Dr. Alysia Fischer is a Visiting Assistant Professor at the Center for American and World Cultures and an affiliate in the Department of Anthropology. She is the author of Hot Pursuit: Integrating Anthropology in Search of Ancient Glassblowers.

Dr. Alysia Fischer Awarded a Center for American Research Centers Fellowship

Dr. Alysia Fischer has been awarded a Center for American Research Centers Overseas Senior Fellowship for the summer of 2010. This fellowship supports travel to and two months of research at the American Center for Oriental Research in Amman, Jordan. Funds were awarded for the project "Investigating Jordanian Glass: Archaeological and Contemporary", which will combine the study of late Islamic glass material at the site of Dhiban with the study of modern glass-blowers in Jordan.

Dr. Alysia Fischer is a Visiting Assistant Professor at the Center for American and World Cultures.

2009 First Annual Diversity Awards Banquet Honors Advocates

Campus Activities Council, the Diversity Affairs Council, the Office of Diversity Affairs and the Office of Student Activities and Leadership hosted the first annual Diversity Awards Banquet on April 1st, as a part of Diversity Week 2009. Nominations from student groups were taken and voted upon by a judging panel of students and administrators.
